CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES
CONFERENCE CHECK-IN (7:00am - 6:00pm Sunday and 7:30am - 11:30am Monday)
You should check into the conference at the Kohala and King's meeting facilities at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. You will receive registration materials, including a bag, a note pad, the program and abstract book, and information material on the Big Island of Hawaii. People attending the tour of the observatories on Mauna Kea or tutorials on Sunday, 3 October should register before the respective activity.TOUR OF THE OBSERVATORIES ON MAUNA KEA (8:30am - 4:00pm Sunday, 3 October and Thursday, 7 October)
Visits to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the other astronomical facilities on Mauna Kea will take place on 3 October and again on 7 October. The journey to the summit of Mauna Kea, located at 4200 m. (14,000 ft.) above sea level, is approximately two and one-half hours, with a stop at Hale Pohaku, the lodging center for the observatories on Mauna Kea. The visit will take most of the day, departing from the hotel at 8:00 am, and returning in the late afternoon. Lunch will be served at the Hale Pohaku cafeteria. CAUTION: Warm clothing is essential as the weather conditions on Mauna Kea are quite different from the warmth of the tropics enjoyed at sea level. Because of the high altitude, people with respiratory, heart, or severe overweight conditions, and pregnant women, are advised not to go higher than the Visitor Information Center, located at the 9,300 feet above sea level. The conference reception will take place at the Lagoon Lanai, near the meeting facilities, on Sunday evening. The reception will include appetizers. A no-host bar will be available, with the first drink free of charge.CONFERENCE BANQUET (6:30 - 9:30pm Tuesday, 5 October)
The conference dinner will take place at the Water's Edge Restaurant, near the meeting facilities, on Tuesday evening. A luau menu will be served (traditional Hawaiian food), which includes vegetarian choices. Any other type of menu requests should be noted on the registration form. As part of the evening program, we will be introducing you to kahiko, ancient hula.VISIT TO THE MAUI HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CENTER and MAUI SPACE SURVEILLANCE SITE (Thursday)
