HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS

The Hotel/Car reservations deadline of 2 August has passed; The Hilton Hotel and National Car Rental are continuing to accept requests for reservations based on availability. The rates applied to late reservations will continue being the same as originally offered until further notice.

The ADASS'99 conference will be held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel , located on the Kohala coast.  A block of rooms have been reserved for the conference participants.  The rate for single or double occupancy is $94 + 11.41% state & hotel tax. This rate will be extended three days before and after the conference dates.  The Hilton Waikoloa is located approximately 21 miles north from the Kona airport.  There is one other hotel within walking distance as well as a small shopping mall, The King's Shops,  where a number of restaurants are located.  The Hilton provides free shuttles between the hotels and the shopping mall upon request.  You can make room reservations by filling out the Hilton Waikoloa Village Reservation Form and returning it directly to the hotel.

If you experience any problems submitting your room reservation via the electronic reservation form, you may wish to communicate directly with the hotel at koahw-groups@hilton.com. Please mention the block of rooms reserved for the ADASS'99 Conference and the $94 room rate.

To book the special ADASS '99 special rate, please visit the ADASS '99 Online Group Reservations web page at http://www.hilton.com/groups/adass99/index.html Select either the "Check Rates and Availability" or the "Online Reservations" navigational buttons. Complete the Reservation Form and request availability. On occasion, the ADASS '99 rate may not appear to be the default rate. If this occurs, please hit your browser's BACK button and then hit RELOAD. This should correct the problem. If this doesn't work, you may simply add our three group code (CFH) into the indicated field prior to checking availability.

In order to confirm a room assignment, a one night deposit will be required (charged to your credit card or by check); this deposit is refundable up to 72 hours prior to arrival. You may also make room reservations by calling 808-886-1234; you should mention the ADASS'99 conference to ensure the correct rates are applied. Note that the ADASS Group Code already appears in the reservations form. Your reservation will be acknowledged by the hotel and a confirmation number will be provided.

IMPORTANT: ABOVE RATE AND BLOCK OF ROOMS WILL BE HELD
UNTIL 2 AUGUST 1999.  PLEASE MAKE HOTEL ARRANGEMENTS
PRIOR TO THIS DATE.

AIRPORT / AIRLINES

There are two major airports on the Big Island:  Hilo and Kona. You should arrive at the Kona airport, on the Kohala coast, and closest to the site where the conference will take place. The Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel is approximately 21 miles north from the Kona airport. Upon exiting the airport, turn left. The next turn you will take will be on your left, to enter the resort where the hotel is located. The sign on the road reads: Waikoloa Beach Resort.

The airline with nonstop flights from the mainland US to Kona is United Airlines(San Francisco / Los Angeles). Hawaiian Airlines has direct flights (Los Angeles) with stops on Maui (inbound) and in Honolulu (outbound). If flying into Honolulu, both inter-island airlines, Hawaiian and Aloha, have several daily nonstop flights to Kona.  For those participants coming from Japan: Japan Airlines has daily nonstop flights from Tokyo to Kona.

CAR RENTAL / TRANSPORTATION

There is very little public transportation on the Big Island and none that regularly services the airport.  For transportation between the airport and hotel, you may wish to take a taxi or rent a car. The local organizing committee strongly encourages participants to rent a car, if possible.

TAXI

Paradise Taxi:  24 hour service.  Telephone: 329-1234;  toll free(800)595-8211.  (Note that rates are regulated by the County); This company is the only one that will accept credit cards.
Rates: Airport to Hilton Waikoloa Village:  $41 per one-way trip. This company also has a van service (7 passengers) where, when reserved by a group, the same $41 rate will be divided among the number of passengers.

Please note that if reservations are made in advance, Paradise Taxi will greet participant at the airport with an ADASS sign, for easy recognition.

Most times a number of taxis will be available at the Kona Airport from a variety of other companies.  The rates are the same.

You may book in advance your transportation to the airport through the hotel concierge desk.

NATIONAL CAR RENTAL

We have reserved a number of cars with National Car Rental.  You may make reservations via e-mail by contacting the agent responsible for the reserved block of cars for ADASS: murashigef@nationalcar.com Your request will be acknowledged via e-mail, providing a reservation confirmation number.  In order for your reservation to be applied to the block of cars reserved, please make reference to the ADASS Conference, and include Recap No. 6800049 .  The daily rates offered are the following:Compact, $28 ; Midsize, $30 ; Full-size, $36 ; Jeep, $44 ; Convertible, $46 ; Mini van, $57 .  To these rates 11.75% tax should be added.  The block of cars reserved will be held until 2 August 1999. Please make car rental arrangements prior to this date.

VISIT TO THE OBSERVATORIES ON MAUNA KEA

Both of the tours of the Mauna Kea Observatories are at capacity. Participants may no longer register for these tours.

Visits to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the other astronomical facilities on Mauna Kea will take place on 3 October and again on 7 October.  The journey to the summit of Mauna Kea, located at 4200 m. (14,000 ft.) above sea level, is approximately two and one-half hours, with a stop at Hale Pohaku, the lodging center for the observatories on Mauna Kea.  The visit will take most of the day, departing from the hotel at  8:00 am, and returning in the late afternoon.  Lunch will be served at the Hale Pohaku cafeteria.  CAUTION: Warm clothing is essential as the weather conditions on Mauna Kea are quite different from the warmth of the tropics enjoyed at sea level. Because of the high altitude, people with respiratory, heart, or severe overweight conditions, and pregnant women, are advised not to go higher than the Visitor Information Center, located at the 9,300 feet above sea level.  For further information on Mauna Kea, please visit the web site of the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy - Visitor Center. Due to the practical arrangements necessary for this visit, space is limited and advance registration (on the conference registration form) is necessary.

VISIT TO THE MAUI HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CENTER and MAUI SPACE SURVEILLANCE SITE

The Maui High Performance Computer Center (MHPCC) has offered to host a visit for the ADASS participants to the MHPCC and the Maui Space Surveillance Site (MSSS), both located on the island of Maui.  This visit is scheduled to take place on 7 October.  When making travel plans, participants visiting the MHPCC might wish to depart from Maui back to their destination instead of returning to the Big Island.  Information on the visit schedule, registration, accommodations and transportation is located in the MHPCC web site.

The Maui High Performance Computing Center is a Distributed Center of High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP), providing resources to HPCMP researchers, the Pacific Region Department of Defense community, other government organizations, private industry, and academia.  MHPCC is a recognized leader in scalable computing technologies and applications.  MHPCC provides an innovative environment for migrating projects from research to operations, offers both classified and unclassified computing capabilities, and has an expert staff to assist in prototyping, bench marking, and testing applications.  Also included in the tour is the Maui Space Surveillance Site, the US Air Force's premier optical observing site and home to an on going program of research in high resolution imaging techniques and astronomical research.
