celebrate: to demonstrate satisfaction by festivities or other deviations from routine

On August 6, 1979, CFHT saw first light at the primary focus. In the more than 20 years since that time, about 1018 photons have been collected. This year, as CFHT reaches the traditional age of maturity, we wish to celebrate.

We look forward to a week of events that will include a community oriented Open House to be held on November 28, a Lecture Series for the general public, culminating in a Scientific Meeting dedicated to the past, present, and future of CFHT.

The CFHT21 Scientific Meeting is planned for Friday, December 1, and Saturday, December 2, 2000, and will take place at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. We will also have a guided tour of the CFHT dome and summit area on Sunday, December 3, and a Celebratory Dinner will be held on the Friday evening.

A special program has been initiated to encourage study of concepts for a replacement facility on our site. Some responses to this call may be viewed through our CFHT21 Web pages. We encourage all interested members of our community to submit their ideas and concepts relating to the future use of our site through the Poster Session.

Please note that we are very interested in memorabilia associated with CFHT, especially photographs or other significant documents. See our Contact Information pages if you have some material that you would be willing to part with or to share at this event.

Please come and celebrate our 21 splendid years of growth and achievement and to share the visions for the future of our telescope.
