CFHT21: A meeting to Celebrate 21 years of CFHT Observationscelebrate: to demonstrate satisfaction by festivities or other deviations from routineThis celebratory meeting, CFHT21, is planned for Friday, Dec 1 and Saturday, Dec 2, 2000 and will take place at the Waikoloa Outrigger resort on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. We will also have guided tours of the CFHT dome and summit area on Sunday, Dec 3 and a banquet will be held on the Friday evening. The primary purpose of this meeting is to honour those who have shaped CFHT, to highlight the signature scientific achievements of our astronomical communities and to assess the impact that CFHT has had on our field. We shall also consider the near future and the exciting work to be done with the new wide-field instruments planned for CFHT and, finally, there will be a look at the more distant horizon with a presentation of concepts for CFHT beyond the present decade. It promises to be a memorable occasion and all members of the CFHT community are welcome to attend. The format of the meeting will feature invited oral presentations and will proceed roughly along a chronological trajectory beginning with the "Early Days" and finishing with a look at the future. The limited time available for oral presentations cannot do justice to the full scope of the work accomplished by the CFHT community. Consequently, we have reserved space for a large poster session. Posters on any topic relevant to the CFHT are welcome and we particularly encourage submissions that describe innovative use of the CFHT resources over the coming decade. A special program has been initiated to encourage study of concepts for a replacement facility on our site. Some responses to this call may be viewed through our CFHT21 Web site. We encourage all interested members of our community to submit their ideas and concepts relating to the future use of our site through the Poster Session. Keep an eye on this web site for information on registration, practical arrangements and contacts. Please note that we are very interested in memorabilia associated with CFHT, especially photographs or other significant documents. Please come and celebrate our 21 splendid years of growth and achievement and to share the visions for the future of our telescope. |
