This photograph, exposed for 1 hour, captures the stars as the Earth
rotates against them in the night, producing these trails. I drove a car down
the road during the exposure, the brake lights adding a red trace. It was
pitch black to the human eye, but even atop Mauna Kea the sky is bright
enough to create the impression of a bright night over the course of an
hour.
