The setting Sun projects the shadow of the vent Pu`upoli `ahu on the eastern
Mauna Kea ridge. After the Sun has set on the horizon, it projects
the shadow of the Earth on the upper atmosphere, preceeded by the pink light
which is the result of the backscattered red sunlight on dusty particles in
the upper atmosphere. The Mauna Kea observatories open their dome early at
dusk in order for the temperature inside the dome to balance with the outside
air. The traffic of vehicles at that time of the day is dominated by tourist tours.
