Telescopes observing the Universe at optical and infrared wavelengths, the
majority of the type found on Mauna Kea, use a mirror to gather the light from
distant objects. As the light falls down on the aluminized or silvered surface,
it is reflected and focused onto science instruments that capture it with sensitive
electronic devices. They are mounted on massive mechanical structures that compensate
exactly the Earth's rotation. A telescope is a massive piece of precision mechanics,
with a mobile section easily reaching 300 tons.
