CFH12k

The Detectors

The CFH12k Mosaic will use MIT/Lincoln Labs 2k x 4k 15 micron CCDs which are the result of a development effort led by Gerry Luppino of IfA and Barry Burke of MIT/LL. Consortium members included: CFHT, IfA, ESO, AAO, Keck and Subaru. CFHT acquired IfA's share of the devices and selected 4 devices in the first round of selection. The general characteristics of these devices is shown in the table below.

Horizontal CTE
0.99999 - 1.0
Vertical CTE
0.999995 - 0.999999
Full well
106,000 - 176,000 electrons
Dark current at -110 ºC
1.8 - 5.8 electrons per pixel per hour
Readout noise at 4µs/sample
2-5.5 electrons/pixel

The backside passivation technology involves laser annealing of a boron implant. The overall Q.E. curves look reasonably good except for lack of response below 3900 Angstroms. Lincoln labs have experienced difficulties with the uniformity of the annealing process and a regular pattern of high and low quantum efficiency is seen across the devices.
