CFH12k Queued Observing Programme: Preliminary Description

Appendix 1. Terminology

The following terms are used in this document:

Investigator: the principal investigator or co-investigator of a proposal.

Observer: the astronomer making observations at the telescope and/or in Waimea.

Coordinator: the CFHT staff member who leads the queued observing team.

Programme: a single observing programme as defined by a single proposal, consisting of multiple observation groups.

Run: a period of contiguous nights during which the CFH12k camera is mounted on CFHT. There may be multiple runs per semester.

I-time: time at the telescope under a dark sky with the camera shutter open. This does not include overhead associated with telescope pointing, camera readout time, etc.

Field: a single CFH12k field, specified by celestial coordinates and mosaic size and orientation

Exposure Group: A set of exposures on the same field, with the same observational constraints, to be obtained together.

Viable: An exposure or group is defined as viable if the field is available to the telescope and if the exposure can be completed within the available I-time of a night or run.

Rank: the relative scientific importance of a proposal as determined by the TAC.

Priority: the relative, instantaneous priority of a proposal during the execution of the observing queue. (In this document, "higher" priority implies a larger numerical value.)

Seeing band: Each constraint template, which specifies the observational constraints associated with an exposure group includes a statement of the acceptable seeing. For simplicity's sake, the seeing will be broken up into a series of bands (e.g. <0.4", 0.41-0.5", 0.51-0.6", etc).
