Mounting ARGUS (set-up crew)

Mounting

The procedure for installing the ARGUS unit in MOS is as follows:

1- Remove the ARGUS parts from the storage box. Dismount the (upper) protective plate from the front optics box and the adaptor plate.

2- Command the mirror carriage with the MOS/SIS controller into position 2 with the command "no_mir", or with the MOS mirror motion in MOS window if you are under Pegasus. Visually inspect the movement.

3- Mount the adaptor plate to the bottom of the mirror carriage. It is unsymmetrical, so be careful to put the larger side towards the MOS side.

4- Remove the light cover (2 parts) from the front optics box. Check the Z reading (focus) of the focal enlarger. With present setting, it should be 15.0; will be updated if we can improve during a night with very good seeing. Install the focal enlarger onto the top plate.

5- On the other part, i.e. slide plus fibre bundle, remove the protective Teflon cap on the entrance side of the bundle.

6- Insert the entrance side at the bottom of the focal enlarger. There is a small "finger" for insuring proper orientation. Maintain it with the small "horse-shoe" piece (4 screws).

7- Re-install the light cover: large part covering 3 sides + small part near the fibre bundle.

8- Remove the protective plate in front of the "slit" on the ARGUS slide. Insert the slide in MOS. As usual, the MOS slide carriage should have been put first at position 1.

9- Put the bottom cover of MOS on; do not worry if the hanging bundle touches this cover.

Dismounting

The procedure for dismounting the ARGUS unit is as follows:

1- Remove the light cover from the front optics assembly. It consists of 2 parts and is fixed with 5 screws.

2- This gives access to the "horse-shoe" piece that holds the entrance side of the fibre bundle. Remove this piece (4 screws) and disconnect the fibre bundle from the front optics assembly.

3- Put the protective Teflon cap on the entrance side of the fibre bundle.

4- Dismount the ARGUS slide, with attached fibre bundle, from MOS and set aside. Put the protective plate on the slide, in front of the ARGUS "slit" (4 screws). \

5- Replace the light cover over the front optics block.

6- Finish dismounting the front optics box from MOS. Remove the adaptor plate from the bottom of MOS/SIS (under mirror carriage).

7- Put protective plate on the front end of the front optics box. Put all the pieces in the storage box, protected with foam.

The only tools needed for this operation are one 2.5 mm hex wrench and one 3.0 mm hex wrench.

Storage

The various parts of the ARGUS device, as well as tools needed for its mounting, should be put in the wooden box marked for ARGUS, to be stored at 2nd floor in a MOS cabinet.

Set-up procedures

Set-up procedures are similar to those for the normal MOS mode.

Mount the Argus grism wheel.
Mount the filter wheel with the filters requested by the observers.
The internal focus for imaging mode can be adjusted as usual with a pin-hole in position 2 of the Argus slide (it is a good idea to install this pinhole in the slide before mounting the whole system).
The alignment of grisms can be done directly on the spectra of halogen lamp through the ARGUS (for instance by following the "dead" fibres used as spacers, which should be horizontal).
