CFHT OBSERVING REPORT
RunID: 03AF8B
Name: Nuno Peixinho
Email Address: Nuno.Peixinho@obspm.fr
Support Astronomer: Lai
Observing Assistant #1: Woodworth
Observing Assistant #2: No second OA
Instrument: CFHTIR
Detector: CFHTIR
Number of nights: 2
# of hours lost to weather: 3
# of hours lost to CFHT: 1
# of hours lost to setup: 0
# of hours lost to other reasons: 0
Results obtained: IJHK photometry of Centaurs and TNOs. The first night was not
phometric, although the sky was clear, and the consequent errors
on the 4 objects measured invalidate them for science except possibly
for the 2 objects done at the end of the night where sky reached a
certain stability. The second night was photometric and 5 objets
were measured. On the first night the dome closed for about 45 minutes
due to fog. Slight tecnical problems on both nights. On the first one
problems with the dithering that abortee exposures. This probelem
happened sometimes on the second night also. The limiting exposure of
only 1.5 s on the second night (due to internal changes) brought some
problems to do dome flats and also bright standards.
Scientific Success: average
Recommendations: The facilities are excelent. Staff suport is also
excelent. Nonetheless, the "analogical" manual
focus control shoudl be improved greatly.
Dithering problems happened and it would be precious
to have this fixed. The impossibility of doing
exposures with less than 1.5s is a technical
issue that deserves also a lot of effort to solve
it, since it is indeed limitating to the observer.
The "spead" of one saturared star among the four
quadrants of the CCD is a strange feature and it
would be good to see it disapear. The 4 quadrants
of the CCD are perhaps also too marked. To sumarise
the CFHT should engage more efforts on the study
of the detector, since ther are too many "slight
things" that don't work well. It seems that the
staff makes serious efforts to solve it all, but
we would like to see it working in perfection,
of course.
