7 Retrieving files from the archive

Normally procedure, you should not have to retrieve files. Since the CADC database is now online with STARCAT, resident as well as visiting astronomers should recover their lost files from the database, rather than by asking the archive people to do it for them. However it may happen that a file request will come in for files only available at CFHT. Or you may want to inspect some files for any given reason.

The procedures explained in the next sections retrieve files in the current directory. What is usually done is:

Note that for changing directory permission and files ownership, you usually need to get temporary root privileges on the machine the destination disk is attached to.

Note also that you don't need to run any archive software to retrieve files (that is you don't need to be on alohi). However, as mentionned below, if you want to retrieve files from a device currently part of the archive pipeline, then you need to stop the corresponding daemon to avoid conflict, as explained below.
