Observing Statistics for 1998

El Nino had both good and bad effects on observing at Mauna Kea. While the time lost to weather was much smaller than usual the seeing during the first 5 months was much worse than average. The seeing in June and July have been much better and we hope this continues for the rest of the year.

Thus far, to July 25, in 1998 there have been approximately 2050 hours of usable time (twilight to twilight + 1 hour) available. A total of 12.3 percent has been lost, 4.1 percent to technical problems and 8.2% to weather. The percentage of time lost for 1996, 1997 and thus far in 1998 are summarized in the table above. Shutdown refers to scheduled shutdown time.
