Next Generation CFHT Committee (NGC)
|
 |
|
During its sixtieth meeting in December 1997, the CFHT Board of Directors
authorized the creation of the Next Generation CFHT Committee (NGC) to
discuss possible scenarii for the future of CFHT.
Specifically, the charge assigned to the committee is as follows:
The CFHT community envisions replacing its present telescope on Mauna
Kea with a new one which will be operational by the year 2010. The committee
is charged with beginning the definition and planning of the new CFHT by
providing the following:
-
A prediction of the most important scientific questions that the CFHT community
will want to address in the period beginning 2010 and a description of
the type of facility needed to address such questions.
-
A projection of the worldwide situation for ground- and space-based observing
facilities in the year 2010 and an analysis of how a new CFHT could fit
into this overall context.
-
One, or preferably several, proposed concepts for the new CFHT. For each
concept, the committee is asked to provide an outline of the scientific
objectives which the facility could achieve together with a description
of the basic performance specifications which the facility would need to
meet in order to achieve these objectives.
Claude Catala and Harvey Richer have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the
NGC.
The committee's report to the CFHT Board is now available. This
draft report will be discussed by the Board at its 11-12 December, 1998
meeting. It is being provided in advance so that members of our communities
may express their views to Board members in advance of their meeting.
The report is available in three formats:
-
HTML (without figures)
-
PostScript
-
PDF
This report is one of the inputs to the Board on which the future of CFHT
will be defined.
