PARTIAL COMMISSIONING OF THE MOS/SIS SPECTROGRAPH

Based on the excellent behaviour of the MOS spectrograph as tested
on the sky, we will be offering this new instrument to observers with
allocated MARLIN time starting in August (92II). Technical information
has been provided in the Information Bulletin No. 27 (92II). Please
refer to this document for observing requests preparation. For any
additional information, please contact lefevre@uhcfht (BITNET) or
lefevre@cfht.hawaii.edu (INTERNET).

At this time, we cannot be certain that the active tip/tilt correction
provided by the SIS mirror will be fully operational by the start of
93I. The guiding of SIS in the active mode is currently possible only
for guide stars with m<14; a complete rework of the SIS guide optics
and PMTs is under way to allow active guiding for m<19. Observing
requests for SIS in imaging mode with active correction should instead
ask for HRCAM. Observing requests for SIS in spectrographic mode with
active correction should either have a guide star with m<14 at <3 arcmin
from the target, or, in case the guiding system upgrade is not completed,
have a backup program feasible with SIS without active correction, or
with MOS.

The Fabry-Perot mode has also been successfuly tested and will be offered
to observers assigned PALILA time starting in August 92II. We encourage
proposals for this mode for 93I.
