Avant-Propos

Foreword

The fifth Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope User's Meeting was held in Quebec City on May 18-20 1998. About one hundred participants were present at the event organized by the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) under the leadership of John Hutchings and by the local committee at Laval University headed by Gilles Joncas. The French liason was Jean-Gabriel Cuby.

The meeting took place in the charming surrounding of the Old City of Quebec during beautiful weather. The program of the meeting, prepared by SAC, was divided into four parts: 1) instrumentation; 2) telescope operation issues; 3) science done at CFHT and, 4) a general discussion on subjects related to the observatory. The third day, dedicated to the science done at CFHT, was held jointly with the meeting of the Canadian Astronomical Society. In the new era of 8-10m telescopes, the position of CFHT as a first rank facility for research for the involved communities will certainly change. Thus, the meeting was particularly important to better define the needs and establish a general plan for the future of CFHT.

These proceedings include most of the oral talks and posters presented at the meeting. An integral part of the meeting was the general discussion which is also included. It is important to note that these proceedings are available on the CFHT Web site; The quality of the figures is, in general, much better in that version. Some contributions were not received, but to be fair to the program actually presented during the meeting, the titles of these papers are given in an appendix.

CFHT is entering a crucial phase in its history. Previous meetings had a major impact on the activities of the observatory and we believe that this Quebec meeting will also have considerable implications. We hope that these proceedings will be a useful guide for the strategic choices affecting the short, mid- and long term future of CFHT.

Acknowledgements

The editors want to thank all the participants, especially those who contributed to these proceedings, and the SAC for the general planning of this meeting. The local organizing committee of Laval University, under the supervision of Gilles Joncas, deserves warm congratulations for the success of the meeting. Well done! We thank also Moani Akana for the tedious task of transcribing the recording of the general discussion.
