Re: Large programs... WIRCam useless?

A strong challenge. However, recall that quite a significant group in both
Canada and France proposed ideas, came to both national and international
meetings and submitted proposals that lead to partial success and non-parallel
time allocations. Theories for this outcome range from the possibility that the
best available scientific justification did not merit very large time
allocations to the possibility that the assessment and decision process could
not easily accommodate large programs for wircam. The best way to view this is
that the process gave an honest scientific assessment of the case presented.

It is interesting to note that it has been demonstrated at CFHT that Megacam can
observe without degradation at any moon phase in the i' and z' bands. The
capability is in part a tribute to the great care taken in designing the entire
Megaprime system and modifications made to the telescope to reduce scattered
light problems. One of course needs to avoid pointing too close to the moon, but
that is not too restrictive for most programs. With 9 times the area of wircam
and interesting astrophysical information in these wavelength regions the "moon
blind" capability opens up interesting possibilities.
