CFHT New Instrumentation at the 2013+ Horizon
Call for Proposals for Feasibility Studies
Receipt Deadline: 20 October 2007 - 24:00 UTC
At the May 2007 CFHT Users' Meeting, the possibility of bringing to the
telescope new instruments for 2013 and beyond was discussed. The
Scientific Advisory Council of the observatory then recommended that
a call related to new instruments be issued, a recommendation which was
endorsed by the Board of Directors. Details and submission form can be
found in the New Instrumentation at the
2013+ Horizon webpage.

Dark matter mystery deepens in cosmic "train wreck"
Astronomers have discovered a chaotic scene unlike any witnessed before
in a cosmic "train wreck" between giant galaxy
clusters. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and optical telescopes
revealed a dark matter core that was mostly devoid of galaxies, which
may pose problems for current theories of dark matter behavior.

CFHT Large Program Campaign [2008B-2012B] is now open!
CFHT observing time on MegaCam, WIRCam and ESPaDOnS will be open to large
Programs over the [2008B-2012B] period. Letters of Intent of proposals
for Large Programs in response to this first call should be received
before October 15 - 24:00UTC. The submission form and information file
can be accessed directly in PDF
format.

MegaCam jukebox failure
On June 17, MegaCam's jukebox failed and moved while the i' filter was
partially inserted in the beam underneath the camera. The MegaCam Status page provides information on
the failure, its consequences, and the recovery efforts to put it back on
the telescope.

Astronomers find most distant black hole
A team of astronomers from Canada, France and the United States is
announcing the discovery of a
record-breaking black hole located nearly 13 billion light years from
the Earth.

Group of galaxies found to bend the light of remote galaxies
The discovery of a new class of
gravitational lenses, the groups of galaxies, by an international
team of astronomers using the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey
(CFHTLS), comes 20 years after the publication in January 1987 of the
first image of a gravitational arc, made also at CFHT with one of the
first CCD cameras in operation at an observatory.

CFHT Users meeting in Marseille (9-11 May 2007)
CFHT Users' Meetings are held every three years. They are a unique
opportunity for the members of the CFHT communities to share their
scientific results and discuss their ideas on the evolution of the
Observatory and on the kind of instrumentation and services they would
like the CFHT Corporation to offer in the coming years. This year's
meeting will discuss Building CFHT's Future.

A giant planet embedded in the magnetosphere of its star
Using the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter installed at CFHT, an
international team of researchers led by two french astronomers has just
discovered a magnetic field on tau Bootis, a
star orbited by a giant planet on a close-in orbit: the first ever
detection of this kind!

2006 October 15 Earthquake Aftermath at CFHT
Hawaii was hit by 3 consecutive earthquakes on
Sunday, October 15. The
good news is that nobody in the CFHT staff and their families were
injured. Damages to the headquarters in Waimea are somewhat limited:
there are no structural problems and no issue with plumbing and
electrical wiring, but for a few light fixtures here and there. A first
assessment of the summit shows no apparent severe damage to the building
and no obvious leak of any kind. The telescope clearly moved and bent
some of the earthquake restraints, which played their role! The right
ascension encoder looks smashed. The dome moved too, and it will have to
be readjusted before moving again.

Smart-1 impact seen at CFHT!
The impact of the Smart-1 probe was recorded at
CFHT using the WIRCam wide-field infrared camera. The flash of the
impact, as well as the the dust generated after the crash, are clearly
seen in CFHT's images and animations.

The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope goes wide... in the infrared too!
CFHT is extending its wide vision to the invisible red side of the
spectrum, thanks to WIRCam, an infrared camera recently put in
operation. Images obtained during the
commissioning phase of the camera and released today illustrate its
excellent image quality and shows how it complements the visible
wide-field camera MegaCam.

Small stars have simple magnetic fields. A team of
astronomers working in France, the UK and the USA have found that the
magnetic field of a very faint star defies all
theoretical predictions. |
