An 8-m telescope dedicated to wide-field spectroscopy on the CFHT's pier
Christian Veillet
Abstract: With the many large imaging surveys contemplated for the next decade, using mostly still-to-be-built facilities like the Dark Energy Camera, Pan-STARSS-4, the LSST, or Hyper-SuprimeCam, there will be a need for wide-field spectroscopy. This need is clearly recognized and wide-field spectrographs (like Gemini%92s WFMOS on Subaru) are in their design phase. An instrument like WFMOS would find its best use as full-time host of a wide-field 8-m telescope which could be built on the CFHT pier, a concept which is not new by any means. This presentation will look at the feasibility of such a concept, at its scientific rationale and its ramifications in the potential use of Mauna Kea telescopes and new partnerships around CFHT.
