The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA09)
is a global effort initiated by the IAU (International Astronomical Union) and UNESCO (United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to help the citizens of the world rediscover their
place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder
and discovery. The International Year of
Astronomy 2009 is endorsed by the United Nations and the International Council of Science.
"Hawaiian Starlight" was present at the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Astronomy
held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on January 15-16 2009. The film was displayed in the
CFHT exhibit section along with some stunning images of our Hawaiian Starlight
astronomical exhibit co-sponsored by Canon USA and Kohala Giclee (right). The film was also presented
in that same location the next week during the IAU Symposium on "The Role of Astronomy in Society and Culture".
If you are interested in screening the "Hawaiian Starlight" film at a free event in the context of the celebration
of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, we invite you to contact us. We emphasize the importance of having the audience
attending the screening for free (no admittance fee to the screening). This film is protected under the copyright
act and while we show our support by offering the screening for free within the IYA09 context (and buying the DVD
opens such right), we simply require in return being asked the permission to do so. Also for such showings, the film must not be edited or shown in anything
but its entirety and must be played using an official DVD produced by CFHT. The DVD&IYA09
information sheet is available in English or French.
