CFHT has teamed with the W. M. Keck Observatory to sponsor the 2nd annual online star party, culminating with a live stargazing event.
“Our annual Winter Star Party is an important tradition that allows us to connect with the community and celebrate the holiday season,” said Mary Beth Laychak, strategic communications director at the Canada-France-Hawai‘i Telescope. “While the event is different this year, we hope our friends, neighbors, students and educators will find the fun in learning about the stars and sky.”
Ask a Remote Observer
Students, teachers and anyone interested in all things astronomy will get an insider’s look at what it’s like to observe the night sky in one of the world’s best telescopes. The interactive Q&A video will discuss fascinating observations and provide a tour of the remote observing room.
Holiday Gift Guide for Novice Astronomers For those wishing to take up a new hobby or find the perfect gift for their own novice astronomer, CFHT’s instrumentation engineers will help you find the best telescopes and binoculars to add to the toolkit.
Ask an Astronomer
In 2020, Dr. Nadine Manset and Dr. Laurie Rousseau-Nepton took audience questions on science, technology and the galaxy’s mysterious objects. The live, interactive segment expanded viewers’ understanding of earth and astronomy.
DIY Spectrograph
Shelly Pelfrey, outreach coordinator at the W. M. Keck Observatory, demonstrates how to make your own spectrograph at home. With your spectrograph, you'll be able to uncover the rainbows that exist around us.
Join us on December 11th from 6:30-9:00pm as we stream live from the Maunakea Visitor Information Station. Join us to see stars, galaxies, nebula and more in realtime. Moderated by Mary Beth Laychak, director of strategic communications at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions about the objects viewed during the session and any astronomy question they have. Please note, the Maunakea Visitor Information Station is not open for stargazing, the entire event is online. Do not go to the VIS for viewing.
