The
whole field
Various resolution downloads: Scientific description: This image covers D1, one of the so-called "Deep Fields" of the CFHT Legacy Survey. This D1 field is - embedded in the CFHTLS-W1 field, - centered in the Deep area of the VLT-VIRMOS Deep Survey field, in which spectroscopic optical follow-up is taking place at the VLT with VIMOS, up to I_AB=24 at more than 80% completeness, - located within the area covered by the XMM-LSS survey: 20 ksec XMM pointings per field, - and is also a GALEX and SIRTF target. The data obtained on more then half a million galaxies shown in this image, and even more when more images will be added as the CFHTLS progresses, will be used not only by themselves, but with the information obtained from ground and space at other wavelengths for a better understanding of the evolution of the structure of the universe. D1 is also observed very regularly, once every to 2 to 4 days when it is observable (5 to 6 months a year), in order to detect the SuperNovae appearing in the field. More information on this aspect of the CFHTLS can be found here. Technical description: Credit
